Full Verse-by-Verse Surah Kahf Arabic + Transliteration + English Translation

Ayah 1 Arabic: الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَنزَلَ عَلَىٰ عَبْدِهِ الْكِتَابَ وَلَمْ يَجْعَل لَّهُ عِوَجًا ۜ Transliteration: Alhamdu lillahil-ladhi anzala ‘ala ‘abdihil-kitaba wa lam yaj’al lahu ‘iwaja. English Translation: All praise is due to Allah, who has sent down upon His Servant the Book and has not made therein any crookedness.

Ayah 2 Arabic: قَيِّمًا لِّيُنذِرَ بَأْسًا شَدِيدًا مِّن لَّدُنْهُ وَيُبَشِّرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ الَّذِينَ يَعْمَلُونَ الصَّالِحَاتِ أَنَّ لَهُمْ أَجْرًا حَسَنًا Transliteration: Qayyimal liyundhira ba’san shadeedam min ladunhu wa yubashshiral-mu’mineenal-ladheena ya’malunas-salihati anna lahum ajran hasana. English Translation: [He has made it] straight, to warn of severe punishment from Him and to give good tidings to the believers who do righteous deeds that they will have a good reward.

Ayah 3 Arabic: مَاكِثِينَ فِيهِ أَبَدًا Transliteration: Makitheena feehi abada. English Translation: In which they will remain forever.

Ayah 4 Arabic: وَيُنذِرَ الَّذِينَ قَالُوا اتَّخَذَ اللَّهُ وَلَدًا Transliteration: Wa yundhiral-ladheena qalut-takhadhallahu walada. English Translation: And to warn those who say, “Allah has taken a son.”

Ayah 5 Arabic: مَّا لَهُم بِهِ مِنْ عِلْمٍ وَلَا لِآبَائِهِمْ ۚ كَبُرَتْ كَلِمَةً تَخْرُجُ مِنْ أَفْوَاهِهِمْ ۚ إِن يَقُولُونَ إِلَّا كَذِبًا Transliteration: Ma lahum bihi min ‘ilmin wa la li aba’ihim. Kaburat kalimatan takhruju min afwahihim. In yaqooloona illa kadhiba. English Translation: They have no knowledge of it, nor had their fathers. Grave is the word that comes out of their mouths; they speak not except a lie.

Ayah 6 Arabic: فَلَعَلَّكَ بَاخِعٌ نَّفْسَكَ عَلَىٰ آثَارِهِمْ إِن لَّمْ يُؤْمِنُوا بِهَٰذَا الْحَدِيثِ أَسَفًا Transliteration: Fala’allaka bakhi’un nafsaka ‘ala atharihim in lam yu’minoo bihadhal-hadeethi asafa. English Translation: Then perhaps you would kill yourself in grief, following after them, if they do not believe in this message.

Ayah 7 Arabic: إِنَّا جَعَلْنَا مَا عَلَى الْأَرْضِ زِينَةً لَّهَا لِنَبْلُوَهُمْ أَيُّهُمْ أَحْسَنُ عَمَلًا Transliteration: Inna ja’alna ma ‘alal-ardi zeenatal-laha linabluwahum ayyuhum ahsanu ‘amala. English Translation: Indeed, We have made that which is on the earth adornment for it that We may test them [as to] which of them is best in deed.

Ayah 8 Arabic: وَإِنَّا لَجَاعِلُونَ مَا عَلَيْهَا صَعِيدًا جُرُزًا Transliteration: Wa inna laja’iloona ma ‘alayha sa’eedan juruza. English Translation: And indeed, We will make that which is upon it [into] a barren ground.

Ayah 9 Arabic: أَمْ حَسِبْتَ أَنَّ أَصْحَابَ الْكَهْفِ وَالرَّقِيمِ كَانُوا مِنْ آيَاتِنَا عَجَبًا Transliteration: Am hasibta anna as-habal-kahfi war-raqeemi kanu min ayatina ‘ajaba. English Translation: Or have you thought that the companions of the cave and the inscription were, among Our signs, a wonder?

Ayah 10 Arabic: إِذْ أَوَى الْفِتْيَةُ إِلَى الْكَهْفِ فَقَالُوا رَبَّنَا آتِنَا مِن لَّدُنكَ رَحْمَةً وَهَيِّئْ لَنَا مِنْ أَمْرِنَا رَشَدًا Transliteration: Idh awal-fityatu ilal-kahfi faqaloo rabbana atina min ladunka rahmatan wa hayyi’ lana min amrina rashada. English Translation: When the youths retreated to the cave and said, “Our Lord, grant us from Yourself mercy and prepare for us from our affair right guidance.”

Ayah 11 Arabic: فَضَرَبْنَا عَلَىٰ آذَانِهِمْ فِي الْكَهْفِ سِنِينَ عَدَدًا Transliteration: Fadarabna ‘ala adhanihim fil-kahfi sineena ‘adada. English Translation: So We cast [a cover of sleep] over their ears within the cave for a number of years.

Ayah 12 Arabic: ثُمَّ بَعَثْنَاهُمْ لِنَعْلَمَ أَيُّ الْحِزْبَيْنِ أَحْصَىٰ لِمَا لَبِثُوا أَمَدًا Transliteration: Thumma ba’athnahum lina’lama ayyul-hizbayni ahsa lima labithu amada. English Translation: Then We awakened them that We might make evident which of the two parties was most precise in calculating what time they had tarried.

Ayah 13 Arabic: نَحْنُ نَقُصُّ عَلَيْكَ نَبَأَهُم بِالْحَقِّ ۖ إِنَّهُمْ فِتْيَةٌ آمَنُوا بِرَبِّهِمْ وَزِدْنَاهُمْ هُدًى Transliteration: Nahnu naqussu ‘alayka naba’ahum bil-haqqi. Innahum fityatun amanoo bi rabbihim wa zidnahum huda. English Translation: It is We who relate to you their story in truth. Indeed, they were youths who believed in their Lord, and We increased them in guidance.

Ayah 14 Arabic: وَرَبَطْنَا عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ إِذْ قَامُوا فَقَالُوا رَبُّنَا رَبُّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ لَن نَّدْعُوَ مِن دُونِهِ إِلَٰهًا ۖ لَّقَدْ قُلْنَا إِذًا شَطَطًا Transliteration: Wa rabatna ‘ala quloobihim idh qamoo faqaloo rabbuna rabbus-samawati wal-ardi lan nad’uwa min doonihe ilahan laqad qulna idhan shatata. English Translation: And We bound [i.e., strengthened] their hearts when they stood up and said, “Our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth. Never will we invoke besides Him any deity. We would have certainly spoken an excessive transgression.”

Ayah 15 Arabic: هَٰؤُلَاءِ قَوْمُنَا اتَّخَذُوا مِن دُونِهِ آلِهَةً ۖ لَّوْلَا يَأْتُونَ عَلَيْهِم بِسُلْطَانٍ بَيِّنٍ ۖ فَمَنْ أَظْلَمُ مِمَّنِ افْتَرَىٰ عَلَى اللَّهِ كَذِبًا Transliteration: Ha’ula’i qawmuna ittakhadhu min doonihe alihatan lawla ya’toona ‘alayhim bisultanin bayyin. Faman azlamu mimman iftara ‘alallahi kadhiba. English Translation: These, our people, have taken besides Him deities. Why do they not bring for them a clear authority? And who is more unjust than one who invents about Allah a lie?

Ayah 16 Arabic: وَإِذِ اعْتَزَلْتُمُوهُمْ وَمَا يَعْبُدُونَ إِلَّا اللَّهَ فَأْوُوا إِلَى الْكَهْفِ يَنشُرْ لَكُمْ رَبُّكُم مِّن رَّحْمَتِهِ وَيُهَيِّئْ لَكُم مِّنْ أَمْرِكُم مِّرْفَقًا Transliteration: Wa idhi i’tazaltumoohum wa ma ya’budoona illallaha fa’woo ilal-kahfi yanshur lakum rabbukum min rahmatihi wa yuhayyi’ lakum min amrikum mirfaqa. English Translation: And when you have withdrawn from them and that which they worship except Allah, then retreat to the cave. Your Lord will spread out for you of His mercy and will prepare for you a facility in your affair.

Ayah 17 Arabic: وَتَرَى الشَّمْسَ إِذَا طَلَعَت تَّزَاوَرُ عَن كَهْفِهِمْ ذَاتَ الْيَمِينِ وَإِذَا غَرَبَت تَّقْرِضُهُمْ ذَاتَ الشِّمَالِ وَهُمْ فِي فَجْوَةٍ مِّنْهُ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللَّهِ ۗ مَن يَهْدِ اللَّهُ فَهُوَ الْمُهْتَدِ ۖ وَمَن يُضْلِلْ فَلَن تَجِدَ لَهُ وَلِيًّا مُّرْشِدًا Transliteration: Wa tarash-shamsa idha tala’at tazawaru ‘an kahfihim dhat al-yameeni wa idha gharabat taqriduhum dhat ash-shimali wa hum fi fajwatin minhu. Dhalika min ayatillahi. Man yahdillahu fahuwa al-muhtadi wa man yudlil falan tajida lahu waliyyan murshida. English Translation: And [had you been present], you would see the sun when it rose, inclining away from their cave on the right, and when it set, passing away from them on the left, while they were [laying] within an open space thereof. That was from the signs of Allah. He whom Allah guides is the [rightly] guided, but he whom He leaves astray — never will you find for him a protecting guide.

Ayah 18 Arabic: وَتَحْسَبُهُمْ أَيْقَاظًا وَهُمْ رُقُودٌ ۚ وَنُقَلِّبُهُمْ ذَاتَ الْيَمِينِ وَذَاتَ الشِّمَالِ ۖ وَكَلْبُهُم بَاسِطٌ ذِرَاعَيْهِ بِالْوَصِيدِ ۚ لَوِ اطَّلَعْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ لَوَلَّيْتَ مِنْهُمْ فِرَارًا وَلَمُلِئْتَ مِنْهُمْ رُعْبًا Transliteration: Wa tahsabuhum ayqadhan wa hum ruqood. Wa nuqallibuhum dhatal-yameeni wa dhata ash-shimali wa kalbuhum basitun dhira’ayhi bil-waseedi. Lawi ittala’ta ‘alayhim lawallayta minhum firaran wa lamuli’ta minhum ru’ba. English Translation: And you would think them awake, while they were asleep. And We turned them to the right and to the left, while their dog stretched his forelegs at the entrance. If you had looked at them, you would have turned from them in flight and been filled by them with terror.

Ayah 19 Arabic: وَكَذَٰلِكَ بَعَثْنَاهُمْ لِيَتَسَاءَلُوا بَيْنَهُمْ ۚ قَالَ قَائِلٌ مِّنْهُمْ كَمْ لَبِثْتُمْ ۖ قَالُوا لَبِثْنَا يَوْمًا أَوْ بَعْضَ يَوْمٍ ۚ قَالُوا رَبُّكُمْ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا لَبِثْتُمْ فَابْعَثُوا أَحَدَكُم بِوَرِقِكُمْ هَٰذِهِ إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ فَلْيَنظُرْ أَيُّهَا أَزْكَىٰ طَعَامًا فَلْيَأْتِكُم بِرِزْقٍ مِّنْهُ وَلْيَتَلَطَّفْ وَلَا يُشْعِرَنَّ بِكُمْ أَحَدًا Transliteration: Wa kadhalika ba’athnahum liyatasaa’alu baynahum. Qala qa’ilun minhum kam labithtum. Qalu labithna yawman aw ba’da yawmin. Qalu rabbukum a’lamu bima labithtum fab’athu ahadakum biwariqikum hadhihi ilal-madinati falyanzur ayyuha azka ta’aman falya’tikum birizqin minhu walyatalattaf wa la yush’iranna bikum ahada. English Translation: And similarly, We awakened them that they might question one another. Said a speaker among them, “How long have you remained [here]?” They said, “We have remained a day or part of a day.” They said, “Your Lord is most knowing of how long you remained. So send one of you with this silver coin of yours to the city and let him look to which is the best of food and bring you provision from it and let him be cautious. And let no one be aware of you.”

Ayah 20 Arabic: إِنَّهُمْ إِن يَظْهَرُوا عَلَيْكُمْ يَرْجُمُوكُمْ أَوْ يُعِيدُوكُمْ فِي مِلَّتِهِمْ وَلَن تُفْلِحُوا إِذًا أَبَدًا Transliteration: Innahum in yadhharu ‘alaykum yarjumukum aw yu’eedukum fi millatihim wa lan tuflihu idhan abada. English Translation: Indeed, if they come to know of you, they will stone you or return you to their religion. And never would you succeed, then, ever.

Ayah 21 Arabic: وَكَذَٰلِكَ أَعْثَرْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ لِيَعْلَمُوا أَنَّ وَعْدَ اللَّهِ حَقٌّ وَأَنَّ السَّاعَةَ لَا رَيْبَ فِيهَا إِذْ يَتَنَازَعُونَ بَيْنَهُمْ أَمْرَهُمْ ۖ فَقَالُوا ابْنُوا عَلَيْهِم بُنْيَانًا ۖ رَّبُّهُمْ أَعْلَمُ بِهِمْ ۚ قَالَ الَّذِينَ غَلَبُوا عَلَىٰ أَمْرِهِمْ لَنَتَّخِذَنَّ عَلَيْهِم مَّسْجِدًا Transliteration: Wa kadhalika a’tharna ‘alayhim liya’lamu anna wa’dallahi haqqun wa annas-sa’ata la rayba feeha idh yatanaza’oona baynahum amrahum faqalubnu ‘alayhim bunyanar-rabbuhum a’lamu bihim. Qalal-ladheena ghalabu ‘ala amrihim lanattakhidhanna ‘alayhim masjida. English Translation: And similarly, We caused them to be discovered so that they would know that the promise of Allah is truth and that of the Hour there is no doubt. When they disputed about their affair, they said, “Construct over them a structure. Their Lord is most knowing about them.” Those who prevailed in their matter said, “We will surely take a masjid over them.”

Ayah 22 Arabic: سَيَقُولُونَ ثَلَاثَةٌ رَّابِعُهُمْ كَلْبُهُمْ وَيَقُولُونَ خَمْسَةٌ سَادِسُهُمْ كَلْبُهُمْ رَجْمًا بِالْغَيْبِ ۖ وَيَقُولُونَ سَبْعَةٌ وَثَامِنُهُمْ كَلْبُهُمْ ۚ قُل رَّبِّي أَعْلَمُ بِعِدَّتِهِم مَّا يَعْلَمُهُمْ إِلَّا قَلِيلٌ ۗ فَلَا تُمَارِ فِيهِمْ إِلَّا مِرَاءً ظَاهِرًا وَلَا تَسْتَفْتِ فِيهِم مِّنْهُمْ أَحَدًا Transliteration: Sayaqooloona thalathatur-rabi’uhum kalbuhum wa yaqooloona khamsatun sadisuhum kalbuhum rajmam bil-ghaybi wa yaqooloona sab’atun wa thaminuhum kalbuhum. Qul rabbi a’lamu bi’iddatihim ma ya’lamuhum illa qaleel. Fala tumari feehim illa mira’an dhahira wa la tastafti feehim minhum ahada. English Translation: They will say there were three, the fourth of them being their dog; and they will say there were five, the sixth of them being their dog – guessing at the unseen; and they will say there were seven, and the eighth of them was their dog. Say, [O Muhammad], “My Lord is most knowing of their number. None knows them except a few. So do not argue about them except with an obvious argument and do not inquire about them among the speculators.”

Ayah 23 Arabic: وَلَا تَقُولَنَّ لِشَيْءٍ إِنِّي فَاعِلٌ ذَٰلِكَ غَدًا Transliteration: Wa la taqulanna lishay’in inni fa’ilun dhalika ghada. English Translation: And never say of anything, “Indeed, I will do that tomorrow,”

Ayah 24 Arabic: إِلَّا أَن يَشَاءَ اللَّهُ ۚ وَاذْكُر رَّبَّكَ إِذَا نَسِيتَ وَقُلْ عَسَىٰ أَن يَهْدِيَنِ رَبِّي لِأَقْرَبَ مِنْ هَٰذَا رَشَدًا Transliteration: Illa an yasha’allahu wadhkur rabbaka idha naseeta wa qul ‘asa an yahdiyani rabbi li-aqraba min hadha rashada. English Translation: Except [when adding], “If Allah wills.” And remember your Lord when you forget [it] and say, “Perhaps my Lord will guide me to what is nearer than this to right conduct.”

Ayah 25 Arabic: وَلَبِثُوا فِي كَهْفِهِمْ ثَلَاثَ مِائَةٍ سِنِينَ وَازْدَادُوا تِسْعًا Transliteration: Wa labithu fi kahfihim thalatha mi’atin sineena wazdadu tis’a. English Translation: And they remained in their cave three hundred years and added nine.

Ayah 26 Arabic: قُلِ اللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا لَبِثُوا ۖ لَهُ غَيْبُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ ۖ أَبْصِرْ بِهِ وَأَسْمِعْ ۚ مَا لَهُم مِّن دُونِهِ مِن وَلِيٍّ وَلَا يُشْرِكُ فِي حُكْمِهِ أَحَدًا Transliteration: Qulillahu a’lamu bima labithu. Lahu ghaybus-samawati wal-ardi. Absir bihi wa asmi’. Ma lahum min doonihe min waliyyin wa la yushriku fi hukmihi ahada. English Translation: Say, “Allah is most knowing of how long they remained. He has [knowledge of] the unseen [aspects] of the heavens and the earth. How seeing is He and how hearing! They have not besides Him any protector, and He shares not His legislation with anyone.”

Ayah 27 Arabic: وَاتْلُ مَا أُوحِيَ إِلَيْكَ مِن كِتَابِ رَبِّكَ ۖ لَا مُبَدِّلَ لِكَلِمَاتِهِ ۖ وَلَن تَجِدَ مِن دُونِهِ مُلْتَحَدًا Transliteration: Watlu ma oohiya ilayka min kitabi rabbika. La mubaddila li kalimatihi wa lan tajida min doonihe multahada. English Translation: And recite what has been revealed to you of the Book of your Lord. There is no changer of His words, and never will you find besides Him any refuge.

Ayah 28 Arabic: وَاصْبِرْ نَفْسَكَ مَعَ الَّذِينَ يَدْعُونَ رَبَّهُم بِالْغَدَاةِ وَالْعَشِيِّ يُرِيدُونَ وَجْهَهُ ۖ وَلَا تَعْدُ عَيْنَاكَ عَنْهُمْ تُرِيدُ زِينَةَ الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا ۖ وَلَا تُطِعْ مَنْ أَغْفَلْنَا قَلْبَهُ عَن ذِكْرِنَا وَاتَّبَعَ هَوَاهُ وَكَانَ أَمْرُهُ فُرُطًا Transliteration: Wasbir nafsaka ma’al-ladheena yad’oona rabbahum bil-ghadati wal-‘ashiyyi yureedoona wajhahu wa la ta’du ‘aynaka ‘anhum tureedu zeenatal-hayatid-dunya. Wa la tuti’ man aghfalna qalbahu ‘an dhikrina wattaba’a hawahu wa kana amruhu furuta. English Translation: And keep yourself patient [by being] with those who call upon their Lord in the morning and the evening, seeking His countenance. And let not your eyes pass beyond them, desiring adornments of the worldly life, and do not obey one whose heart We have made heedless of Our remembrance and who follows his desire and whose affair is ever [in] excess.

Ayah 29 Arabic: وَقُلِ الْحَقُّ مِن رَّبِّكُمْ ۖ فَمَن شَاءَ فَلْيُؤْمِن وَمَن شَاءَ فَلْيَكْفُرْ ۚ إِنَّا أَعْتَدْنَا لِلظَّالِمِينَ نَارًا أَحَاطَ بِهِمْ سُرَادِقُهَا ۚ وَإِن يَسْتَغِيثُوا يُغَاثُوا بِمَاءٍ كَالْمُهْلِ يَشْوِي الْوُجُوهَ ۚ بِئْسَ الشَّرَابُ وَسَاءَتْ مُرْتَفَقًا Transliteration: Wa qulil-haqqu min rabbikum faman shaa falyu’min wa man shaa falyakfur. Inna a’tadna liz-zalimeena naran ahata bihim suradiquha. Wa in yastagheethu yughathu bima’in kal-muhli yashwil-wujooha. Bi’sash-sharabu wa sa’at murtafaqa. English Translation: And say, “The truth is from your Lord, so whoever wills – let him believe; and whoever wills – let him disbelieve.” Indeed, We have prepared for the wrongdoers a fire whose walls will surround them. And if they call for relief, they will be relieved with water like molten brass that will burn [their] faces. How wretched the drink and how evil the resting place.

Ayah 30 Arabic: إِنَّ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ إِنَّا لَا نُضِيعُ أَجْرَ مَنْ أَحْسَنَ عَمَلًا Transliteration: Innal-ladheena amanoo wa ‘amilus-salihati inna la nudi’u ajra man ahsana ‘amala. English Translation: Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds – indeed, We will not allow the reward of one who has done good to be lost.

Ayah 31 Arabic: أُولَٰئِكَ لَهُمْ جَنَّاتُ عَدْنٍ تَجْرِي مِن تَحْتِهِمُ الْأَنْهَارُ يُحَلَّوْنَ فِيهَا مِنْ أَسَاوِرَ مِن ذَهَبٍ وَيَلْبَسُونَ ثِيَابًا خُضْرًا مِّن سُندُسٍ وَإِسْتَبْرَقٍ مُّتَّكِئِينَ فِيهَا عَلَى الْأَرَائِكِ ۚ نِعْمَ الثَّوَابُ وَحَسُنَتْ مُرْتَفَقًا Transliteration: Ula’ika lahum jannatu ‘Adnin tajri min tahtihimul-anharu yuhallawna feeha min asawira min dhahabin wa yalbasoona thiyaban khudran min sundusin wa istabraqin muttaki’eena feeha ‘alal-ara’iki. Ni’math-thawabu wa hasunat murtafaqa. English Translation: Those will have gardens of perpetual residence; beneath them rivers will flow. They will be adorned therein with bracelets of gold and will wear green garments of fine silk and brocade, reclining therein on adorned couches. Excellent is the reward, and good is the resting place.

Ayah 32 Arabic: وَاضْرِبْ لَهُم مَّثَلًا رَّجُلَيْنِ جَعَلْنَا لِأَحَدِهِمَا جَنَّتَيْنِ مِنْ أَعْنَابٍ وَحَفَفْنَاهُمَا بِنَخْلٍ وَجَعَلْنَا بَيْنَهُمَا زَرْعًا Transliteration: Wadrib lahum mathalan rajulayni ja’alna li ahadihima jannatayni min a’nabin wa hafafnahuma binakhlin wa ja’alna baynahuma zar’a. English Translation: And present to them an example of two men: We granted to one of them two gardens of grapevines, and We bordered them with palm trees and placed between them [fields of] crops.

Ayah 33 Arabic: كِلْتَا الْجَنَّتَيْنِ آتَتْ أُكُلَهَا وَلَمْ تَظْلِم مِّنْهُ شَيْئًا ۚ وَفَجَّرْنَا خِلَالَهُمَا نَهَرًا Transliteration: Kiltal-jannatayni atat ukulaha wa lam tathlim minhu shay’an wa fajjarna khilalahuma nahara. English Translation: Each of the two gardens produced its fruit and did not fall short thereof in anything. And We caused to gush forth within them a river.

Ayah 34 Arabic: وَكَانَ لَهُ ثَمَرٌ فَقَالَ لِصَاحِبِهِ وَهُوَ يُحَاوِرُهُ أَنَا أَكْثَرُ مِنكَ مَالًا وَأَعَزُّ نَفَرًا Transliteration: Wa kana lahu thamarun faqala lisahibihi wa huwa yuhawiruhu ana aktharu minka malan wa a’azzu nafara. English Translation: And he had fruit, so he said to his companion while he was conversing with him, “I am greater than you in wealth and mightier in [number of] men.”

Ayah 35 Arabic: وَدَخَلَ جَنَّتَهُ وَهُوَ ظَالِمٌ لِّنَفْسِهِ قَالَ مَا أَظُنُّ أَن تَبِيدَ هَٰذِهِ أَبَدًا Transliteration: Wa dakhala jannatahu wa huwa dhalimun linafsihi qala ma adhunnu an tabeeda hadhihi abada. English Translation: And he entered his garden while he was unjust to himself. He said, “I do not think that this will ever perish.”

Ayah 36 Arabic: وَمَا أَظُنُّ السَّاعَةَ قَائِمَةً وَلَئِن رُّدِدتُّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّي لَأَجِدَنَّ خَيْرًا مِّنْهَا مُنقَلَبًا Transliteration: Wa ma adhunnus-sa’ata qaimatan wa la’in rudidtu ila rabbi la’ajidanna khayran minha munqalaba. English Translation: And I do not think the Hour will occur. And even if I should be brought back to my Lord, I will surely find better than this as a return.

Ayah 37 Arabic: قَالَ لَهُ صَاحِبُهُ وَهُوَ يُحَاوِرُهُ أَكَفَرْتَ بِالَّذِي خَلَقَكَ مِن تُرَابٍ ثُمَّ مِن نُّطْفَةٍ ثُمَّ سَوَّاكَ رَجُلًا Transliteration: Qala lahu sahibuhu wa huwa yuhawiruhu akafarta billadhi khalaqaka min turabin thumma min nutfatin thumma sawwaka rajula. English Translation: His companion said to him while he was conversing with him, “Have you disbelieved in He who created you from dust and then from a sperm-drop and then proportioned you [as] a man?”

Ayah 38 Arabic: لَٰكِنَّا هُوَ اللَّهُ رَبِّي وَلَا أُشْرِكُ بِرَبِّي أَحَدًا Transliteration: Lakinnahu Allahu rabbi wa la ushriku bi rabbi ahada. English Translation: But as for me, He is Allah, my Lord, and I do not associate with my Lord anyone.

Ayah 39 Arabic: وَلَوْلَا إِذْ دَخَلْتَ جَنَّتَكَ قُلْتَ مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ لَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ ۚ إِن تَرَنِ أَنَا أَقَلَّ مِنكَ مَالًا وَوَلَدًا Transliteration: Wa lawla idh dakhalta jannataka qulta ma sha’allahu la quwwata illa billahi in tarani ana aqalla minka malan wa walada. English Translation: And why did you, when you entered your garden, not say, ‘What Allah willed [has occurred]; there is no power except in Allah’? Although you see me less than you in wealth and children.

Ayah 40 Arabic: فَعَسَىٰ رَبِّي أَن يُؤْتِيَنِ خَيْرًا مِّن جَنَّتِكَ وَيُرْسِلَ عَلَيْهَا حُسْبَانًا مِّنَ السَّمَاءِ فَتُصْبِحَ صَعِيدًا زَلَقًا Transliteration: Fa’asa rabbi an yu’tiyani khayran min jannatika wa yursila ‘alayha husbanan minas-sama’i fatusbiha sa’eedan zalaqa. English Translation: It is expected that my Lord will give me [something] better than your garden and will send upon it a calamity from the sky, and it will become a smooth, dusty ground.

Ayah 41 Arabic: أَوْ يُصْبِحَ مَاؤُهَا غَوْرًا فَلَن تَسْتَطِيعَ لَهُ طَلَبًا Transliteration: Aw yusbiha ma’uha ghawran falan tastatee’a lahu talaba. English Translation: Or its water will become sunken [into the earth], so you would never be able to seek it.”

Ayah 42 Arabic: وَأُحِيطَ بِثَمَرِهِ فَأَصْبَحَ يُقَلِّبُ كَفَّيْهِ عَلَىٰ مَا أَنفَقَ فِيهَا وَهِيَ خَاوِيَةٌ عَلَىٰ عُرُوشِهَا وَيَقُولُ يَا لَيْتَنِي لَمْ أُشْرِكْ بِرَبِّي أَحَدًا Transliteration: Wa uheeta bithamarihi fa asbaha yuqallibu kaffayhi ‘ala ma anfaqa feeha wa hiya khawiyatun ‘ala ‘urooshiha wa yaqoolu ya laytanee lam ushrik bi rabbi ahada. English Translation: And his fruits were encompassed [by ruin], so he began to turn his hands about [in dismay] over what he had spent on it, while it was collapsed upon its trellises, and he said, “Oh, I wish I had not associated with my Lord anyone.”

Ayah 43 Arabic: وَلَمْ تَكُن لَّهُ فِئَةٌ تَنصُرُهُ مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ وَمَا كَانَ مُنتَصِرًا Transliteration: Wa lam takun lahu fi’atun tansuruhu min doonillahi wa ma kana muntasira. English Translation: And there was for him no company to aid him other than Allah, nor could he defend himself.

Ayah 44 Arabic: هُنَالِكَ الْوَلَايَةُ لِلَّهِ الْحَقِّ ۚ هُوَ خَيْرٌ ثَوَابًا وَخَيْرٌ عُقْبًا Transliteration: Hunalikal-walayatu lillahil-haqqi. Huwa khayrun thawaban wa khayrun ‘uqba. English Translation: There the only protection comes from Allah, the True. He is best in reward and best in outcome.

Ayah 45 Arabic: وَاضْرِبْ لَهُم مَّثَلَ الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا كَمَاءٍ أَنزَلْنَاهُ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ فَاخْتَلَطَ بِهِ نَبَاتُ الْأَرْضِ فَأَصْبَحَ هَشِيمًا تَذْرُوهُ الرِّيَاحُ ۚ وَكَانَ اللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ مُّقْتَدِرًا Transliteration: Wadrib lahum mathalal-hayatid-dunya kama’in anzalnahu minas-sama’i fakhtalata bihi nabatul-ardi fa asbaha hasheeman tadhruhu ar-riyahu. Wa kanallahu ‘ala kulli shay’in muqtadira. English Translation: And present to them the example of the life of this world: [It is] like rain which We send down from the sky, and the vegetation of the earth mingles with it and [then] it becomes dry remnants, scattered by the winds. And Allah is ever, over all things, competent.

Ayah 46 Arabic: الْمَالُ وَالْبَنُونَ زِينَةُ الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا ۖ وَالْبَاقِيَاتُ الصَّالِحَاتُ خَيْرٌ عِندَ رَبِّكَ ثَوَابًا وَخَيْرٌ أَمَلًا Transliteration: Almalu walbanoona zeenatul-hayatid-dunya. Wal-baqiyat-us-salihatu khayrun ‘inda rabbika thawaban wa khayrun amala. English Translation: Wealth and children are the adornment of the worldly life. But the enduring good deeds are better to your Lord for reward and better for [one’s] hope.

Ayah 47 Arabic: وَيَوْمَ نُسَيِّرُ الْجِبَالَ وَتَرَى الْأَرْضَ بَارِزَةً وَحَشَرْنَاهُمْ فَلَمْ نُغَادِرْ مِنْهُمْ أَحَدًا Transliteration: Wa yawma nusayyirul-jibala wa taral-arda barizatan wa hasharna hum falam nughadir minhum ahada. English Translation: And [warn of] the Day when We will remove the mountains and you will see the earth prominent, and We will gather them and not leave behind from them anyone.

Ayah 48 Arabic: وَعُرِضُوا عَلَىٰ رَبِّكَ صَفًّا لَّقَدْ جِئْتُمُونَا كَمَا خَلَقْنَاكُمْ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍ ۚ بَلْ زَعَمْتُمْ أَلَّن نَّجْعَلَ لَكُم مَّوْعِدًا Transliteration: Wa ‘uridu ‘ala rabbika saffan laqad ji’tumoona kama khalaqnakum awwala marratin bal za’amtum allan naj’ala lakum maw’ida. English Translation: And they will be presented before your Lord in rows, [and He will say], “You have certainly come to Us just as We created you the first time. But you claimed that We would never make for you an appointment.”

Ayah 49 Arabic: وَوُضِعَ الْكِتَابُ فَتَرَى الْمُجْرِمِينَ مُشْفِقِينَ مِمَّا فِيهِ وَيَقُولُونَ يَا وَيْلَتَنَا مَالِ هَٰذَا الْكِتَابِ لَا يُغَادِرُ صَغِيرَةً وَلَا كَبِيرَةً إِلَّا أَحْصَاهَا ۚ وَوَجَدُوا مَا عَمِلُوا حَاضِرًا ۗ وَلَا يَظْلِمُ رَبُّكَ أَحَدًا Transliteration: Wa wudi’al-kitabu fataral-mujrimeena mushfiqeena mimma feehi wa yaqooloona ya waylatana mali hadhal-kitabi la yughadiru sagheeratan wa la kabeeratan illa ahsaha. Wa wajadu ma ‘amilu hadhira. Wa la yadhlumu rabbuka ahada. English Translation: And the record [of deeds] will be placed [open], and you will see the criminals fearful of that within it, and they will say, “Oh woe to us! What is this book that leaves nothing small or great except that it has enumerated it?” And they will find what they did present [before them]. And your Lord will not be unjust to anyone.

Ayah 50 Arabic: وَإِذْ قُلْنَا لِلْمَلَائِكَةِ اسْجُدُوا لِآدَمَ فَسَجَدُوا إِلَّا إِبْلِيسَ كَانَ مِنَ الْجِنِّ فَفَسَقَ عَنْ أَمْرِ رَبِّهِ ۗ أَفَتَتَّخِذُونَهُ وَذُرِّيَّتَهُ أَوْلِيَاءَ مِن دُونِي وَهُمْ لَكُمْ عَدُوٌّ ۚ بِئْسَ لِلظَّالِمِينَ بَدَلًا Transliteration: Wa idh qulna lil-mala’ikatisjudu li Adama fasajadu illa Ibleesa kana minal-jinni fafasaqa ‘an amri rabbihi. Afatattakhidhoonahu wa dhurriyyatahu awliyaa’a min dooni wa hum lakum ‘aduwwun. Bi’sa liz-zalimeena badala. English Translation: And [mention] when We said to the angels, “Prostrate to Adam,” and they prostrated, except for Iblees. He was of the jinn and departed from the command of his Lord. Then will you take him and his descendants as allies other than Me while they are enemies to you? How wretched is the exchange for the wrongdoers.

Ayah 51 Arabic: ۞ مَّا أَشْهَدتُّهُمْ خَلْقَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَلَا خَلْقَ أَنفُسِهِمْ وَمَا كُنتُ مُتَّخِذَ الْمُضِلِّينَ عَضُدًا Transliteration: Ma ash-hadtuhum khalqas-samawati wal-ardi wa la khalqa anfusihim wa ma kuntu muttakhidhal-mudilleena ‘aduda. English Translation: I did not make them witness to the creation of the heavens and the earth or to the creation of themselves, and I would not have taken the misleaders as assistants.

Ayah 52 Arabic: وَيَوْمَ يَقُولُ نَادُوا شُرَكَائِيَ الَّذِينَ زَعَمْتُمْ فَدَعَوْهُمْ فَلَمْ يَسْتَجِيبُوا لَهُمْ وَجَعَلْنَا بَيْنَهُم مَّوْبِقًا Transliteration: Wa yawma yaqoolu nadu shuraka’iyal-ladheena za’amtum fada’awhum falam yastajeeboo lahum wa ja’alna baynahum mawbiqa. English Translation: And [warn of] the Day when He will say, “Call upon those whom you claimed were My partners.” And they will invoke them, but they will not respond to them. And We will put between them [a valley of] destruction.

Ayah 53 Arabic: وَرَأَى الْمُجْرِمُونَ النَّارَ فَظَنُّوا أَنَّهُم مُّوَاقِعُوهَا وَلَمْ يَجِدُوا عَنْهَا مَصْرِفًا Transliteration: Wa ra’al-mujrimoonan-nara fadhannoo annahum muwaqi’ooha wa lam yajidoo ‘anha masrifa. English Translation: And the criminals will see the Fire and will be certain that they are to fall therein. And they will not find from it a way of escape.

Ayah 54 Arabic: وَلَقَدْ صَرَّفْنَا فِي هَٰذَا الْقُرْآنِ لِلنَّاسِ مِن كُلِّ مَثَلٍ ۚ وَكَانَ الْإِنسَانُ أَكْثَرَ شَيْءٍ جَدَلًا Transliteration: Wa laqad sarrafna fee hadhal-qur’ani linnasi min kulli mathalin wa kanal-insanu akthara shay’in jadala. English Translation: And We have certainly diversified in this Quran for the people from every [kind of] example, but man has ever been, most of anything, [prone to] dispute.

Ayah 55 Arabic: وَمَا مَنَعَ النَّاسَ أَن يُؤْمِنُوا إِذْ جَاءَهُمُ الْهُدَىٰ وَيَسْتَغْفِرُوا رَبَّهُمْ إِلَّا أَن تَأْتِيَهُمْ سُنَّةُ الْأَوَّلِينَ أَوْ يَأْتِيَهُمُ الْعَذَابُ قُبُلًا Transliteration: Wa ma mana’an-nasa an yu’minoo idh ja’ahumul-huda wa yastaghfiroo rabbahum illa an ta’tiyahum sunnatul-awwaleena aw ya’tiyahumul-‘adhabu qubula. English Translation: And nothing prevents the people from believing when guidance comes to them except that they say, “Has Allah sent a human messenger?”

Ayah 56 Arabic: وَمَا نُرْسِلُ الْمُرْسَلِينَ إِلَّا مُبَشِّرِينَ وَمُنذِرِينَ ۚ وَيُجَادِلُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا بِالْبَاطِلِ لِيُدْحِضُوا بِهِ الْحَقَّ ۖ وَاتَّخَذُوا آيَاتِي وَمَا أُنذِرُوا هُزُوًا Transliteration: Wa ma nursilul-mursaleena illa mubashshireena wa mundhireen. Wa yujadilul-ladheena kafaroo bil-batili liyudhidoo bihil-haqqa wattakhadhu ayati wa ma undhiroo huzuwan. English Translation: And We send not the messengers except as bringers of good tidings and warners. And those who disbelieve dispute by falsehood to refute thereby the truth and have taken My verses and that of which they are warned in ridicule.

Ayah 57 Arabic: وَمَنْ أَظْلَمُ مِمَّن ذُكِّرَ بِآيَاتِ رَبِّهِ فَأَعْرَضَ عَنْهَا وَنَسِيَ مَا قَدَّمَتْ يَدَاهُ ۚ إِنَّا جَعَلْنَا عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ أَكِنَّةً أَن يَفْقَهُوهُ وَفِي آذَانِهِمْ وَقْرًا ۖ وَإِن تَدْعُهُمْ إِلَى الْهُدَىٰ فَلَن يَهْتَدُوا إِذًا أَبَدًا Transliteration: Wa man adlamu mimman dhukkira bi ayati rabbihi fa a’rada ‘anha wa nasiya ma qaddamat yadahu. Inna ja’alna ‘ala quloobihim akinatan an yafqahoohu wa fi adhanihim waqra. Wa in tad’uhum ilal-huda falan yahtadu idhan abada. English Translation: And who is more unjust than one who is reminded of the verses of his Lord but turns away from them and forgets what his hands have put forth? Indeed, We have placed over their hearts coverings, lest they understand it, and in their ears deafness. And if you call them to guidance, they will never be guided, then ever.

Ayah 58 Arabic: وَرَبُّكَ الْغَفُورُ ذُو الرَّحْمَةِ ۖ لَوْ يُؤَاخِذُهُم بِمَا كَسَبُوا لَعَجَّلَ لَهُمُ الْعَذَابَ ۚ بَل لَّهُم مَّوْعِدٌ لَّن يَجِدُوا مِن دُونِهِ مَوْئِلًا Transliteration: Wa rabbukal-Ghafuru dhul-rahmati law yu’akhiduhum bima kasabu la’ajjala lahumul-‘adhab. Bal lahum maw’idun lan yajidoo min doonihe maw’ila. English Translation: And your Lord is the Forgiving, the Merciful. If He were to impose blame upon them for what they earned, He would have hastened for them the punishment. Rather, for them is an appointed time from which they will never find an escape.

Ayah 59 Arabic: وَتِلْكَ الْقُرَىٰ أَهْلَكْنَاهُمْ لَمَّا ظَلَمُوا وَجَعَلْنَا لِمَهْلِكِهِم مَّوْعِدًا Transliteration: Wa tilkal-qura ahlaknahum lamma dhalamu wa ja’alna limahlikihim maw’ida. English Translation: And those cities – We destroyed them when they wronged, and We made for their destruction an appointed time.

Ayah 60 Arabic: وَإِذْ قَالَ مُوسَىٰ لِفَتَاهُ لَا أَبْرَحُ حَتَّىٰ أَبْلُغَ مَجْمَعَ الْبَحْرَيْنِ أَوْ أَمْضِيَ حُقُبًا Transliteration: Wa idh qala Musa lifatahu la abrahu hatta ablugha majma’al-bahrayni aw amdiya huquba. English Translation: And [mention] when Moses said to his servant, “I will not cease [traveling] until I reach the junction of the two seas or continue for a long period.”

Ayah 61 Arabic: فَلَمَّا بَلَغَا مَجْمَعَ بَيْنِهِمَا نَسِيَا حُوتَهُمَا فَاتَّخَذَ سَبِيلَهُ فِي الْبَحْرِ سَرَبًا Transliteration: Falamma balagha majma’a baynihima nasiya hootahuma fattakhadha sabeelahu fil-bahri saraba. English Translation: But when they reached the junction between them, they forgot their fish, and it took its course into the sea, slipping away.

Ayah 62 Arabic: فَلَمَّا جَاوَزَا قَالَ لِفَتَاهُ آتِنَا غَدَاءَنَا لَقَدْ لَقِينَا مِن سَفَرِنَا هَٰذَا نَصَبًا Transliteration: Falamma jawaza qala lifatahu atina ghada’ana laqad laqeena min safarina hadha nasaba. English Translation: So when they had passed beyond it, [Moses] said to his boy, “Bring us our morning meal. We have certainly suffered in this, our journey, [much] fatigue.”

Ayah 63 Arabic: قَالَ أَرَأَيْتَ إِذْ أَوَيْنَا إِلَى الصَّخْرَةِ فَإِنِّي نَسِيتُ الْحُوتَ وَمَا أَنسَانِيهُ إِلَّا الشَّيْطَانُ أَنْ أَذْكُرَهُ ۚ وَاتَّخَذَ سَبِيلَهُ فِي الْبَحْرِ عَجَبًا Transliteration: Qala ara’ayta idh awayna ilas-sakhrati fa inni naseetul-hoota wa ma ansaneehu illash-shaytanu an adhkurahu wattakhadha sabeelahu fil-bahri ‘ajaba. English Translation: He said, “Did you see when we retired to the rock? Indeed, I forgot the fish. And none made me forget it except Satan – that I should mention it. And it took its course into the sea amazingly.”

Ayah 64 Arabic: قَالَ ذَٰلِكَ مَا كُنَّا نَبْغِ ۚ فَارْتَدَّا عَلَىٰ آثَارِهِمَا قَصَصًا Transliteration: Qala dhalika ma kunna nabghi fartadda ‘ala atharihima qasasa. English Translation: [Moses] said, “That is what we were seeking.” So they returned, following their footprints.

Ayah 65 Arabic: فَوَجَدَا عَبْدًا مِّنْ عِبَادِنَا آتَيْنَاهُ رَحْمَةً مِّنْ عِندِنَا وَعَلَّمْنَاهُ مِن لَّدُنَّا عِلْمًا Transliteration: Fawajada ‘abdan min ‘ibadina ataynahu rahmatan min ‘indina wa ‘allamnahu min ladunna ‘ilma. English Translation: And they found a servant from among Our servants to whom we had given mercy from us and had taught him from Us a [certain] knowledge.

Ayah 66 Arabic: قَالَ لَهُ مُوسَىٰ هَلْ أَتَّبِعُكَ عَلَىٰ أَن تُعَلِّمَنِ مِمَّا عُلِّمْتَ رُشْدًا Transliteration: Qala lahu Musa hal attabi’uka ‘ala an tu’allimani mimma ‘ullimta rushda. English Translation: Moses said to him, “May I follow you on [the condition] that you teach me from what you have been taught of sound judgement?”

Ayah 67 Arabic: قَالَ إِنَّكَ لَن تَسْتَطِيعَ مَعِيَ صَبْرًا Transliteration: Qala innaka lan tastatee’a ma’iya sabra. English Translation: He said, “Indeed, with me you will never be able to have patience.”

Ayah 68 Arabic: وَكَيْفَ تَصْبِرُ عَلَىٰ مَا لَمْ تُحِطْ بِهِ خُبْرًا Transliteration: Wa kayfa tasbiru ‘ala ma lam tuhit bihi khubra. English Translation: And how can you have patience for what you do not encompass in knowledge?”

Ayah 69 Arabic: قَالَ سَتَجِدُنِي إِن شَاءَ اللَّهُ صَابِرًا وَلَا أَعْصِي لَكَ أَمْرًا Transliteration: Qala satajidunee in sha’allahu sabiran wa la a’asee laka amra. English Translation: [Moses] said, “You will find me, if Allah wills, patient, and I will not disobey you in [any] order.”

Ayah 70 Arabic: قَالَ فَإِنِ اتَّبَعْتَنِي فَلَا تَسْأَلْنِي عَن شَيْءٍ حَتَّىٰ أُحْدِثَ لَكَ مِنْهُ ذِكْرًا Transliteration: Qala fa inittaba’tanee fala tas’alnee ‘an shay’in hatta uhditha laka minhu dhikra. English Translation: He said, “Then if you follow me, do not ask me about anything until I make to you about it mention.”

Ayah 71 Arabic: فَانطَلَقَا حَتَّىٰ إِذَا رَكِبَا فِي السَّفِينَةِ خَرَقَهَا ۖ قَالَ أَخَرَقْتَهَا لِتُغْرِقَ أَهْلَهَا ۖ لَقَدْ جِئْتَ شَيْئًا إِمْرًا Transliteration: Fantalaqa hatta idha rakiba fis-safeenati kharaqaha. Qala akharaqtaha litughriqa ahlaha laqad ji’ta shay’an imra. English Translation: So they set out, until when they had embarked on the ship, al-Khidh r tore it. [Moses] said, “Have you torn it so that its people would drown? You have certainly done a grave thing.”

Ayah 72 Arabic: قَالَ أَلَمْ أَقُلْ إِنَّكَ لَن تَسْتَطِيعَ مَعِيَ صَبْرًا Transliteration: Qala alam aqul innaka lan tastatee’a ma’iya sabra. English Translation: [Al-Khidhr] said, “Did I not say that with me you would never be able to have patience?”

Ayah 73 Arabic: قَالَ لَا تُؤَاخِذْنِي بِمَا نَسِيتُ وَلَا تُرْهِقْنِي مِنْ أَمْرِي عُسْرًا Transliteration: Qala la tu’akhidhnee bima naseetu wa la turhiqnee min amri ‘usra. English Translation: [Moses] said, “Do not blame me for what I forgot and do not overwhelm me in my matter with difficulty.”

Ayah 74 Arabic: فَانطَلَقَا حَتَّىٰ إِذَا لَقِيَا غُلَامًا فَقَتَلَهُ قَالَ أَقَتَلْتَ نَفْسًا زَكِيَّةً بِغَيْرِ نَفْسٍ ۖ لَّقَدْ جِئْتَ شَيْئًا نُّكْرًا Transliteration: Fantalaqa hatta idha laqiya ghulaman faqatalahu qala aqatalta nafsan zakiyyatan bighayri nafsin laqad ji’ta shay’an nukra. English Translation: So they set out, until when they met a boy, al-Khidhr killed him. [Moses] said, “Have you killed a pure soul for other than [having killed] a soul? You have certainly done a horrible thing.”

Ayah 75 Arabic: قَالَ أَلَمْ أَقُل لَّكَ إِنَّكَ لَن تَسْتَطِيعَ مَعِيَ صَبْرًا Transliteration: Qala alam aqul laka innaka lan tastatee’a ma’iya sabra. English Translation: [Al-Khidhr] said, “Did I not tell you that with me you could never have patience?”

Ayah 76 Arabic: قَالَ إِن سَأَلْتُكَ عَن شَيْءٍ بَعْدَهَا فَلَا تُصَاحِبْنِي ۖ قَدْ بَلَغْتَ مِن لَّدُنِّي عُذْرًا Transliteration: Qala in sa’altuka ‘an shay’in ba’daha fala tusahibnee qad balaghta min ladunni ‘udhra. English Translation: [Moses] said, “If I should ask you about anything after this, then do not keep me as a companion. You have already obtained from me an excuse.”

Ayah 77 Arabic: فَانطَلَقَا حَتَّىٰ إِذَا أَتَيَا أَهْلَ قَرْيَةٍ اسْتَطْعَمَا أَهْلَهَا فَأَبَوْا أَن يُضَيِّفُوهُمَا فَوَجَدَا فِيهَا جِدَارًا يُرِيدُ أَن يَنقَضَّ فَأَقَامَهُ ۖ قَالَ لَوْ شِئْتَ لَاتَّخَذْتَ عَلَيْهِ أَجْرًا Transliteration: Fantalaqa hatta idha ataya ahla qaryatin istat’ama ahlaha fa abaw an yudayyifohama fawajada feeha jidaran yureedu an yanqadda fa aqamahu. Qala law shi’ta lattakhadhta ‘alayhi ajra. English Translation: So they set out, until when they came to the people of a town, they asked its people for food, but they refused to offer them hospitality. And they found therein a wall about to collapse, so al-Khidhr repaired it. [Moses] said, “If you wished, you could have taken for it a payment.”

Ayah 78 Arabic: قَالَ هَٰذَا فِرَاقُ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنِكَ ۚ سَأُنَبِّئُكَ بِتَأْوِيلِ مَا لَمْ تَسْتَطِع عَّلَيْهِ صَبْرًا Transliteration: Qala hadha firaqu baynee wa baynika. Sa’unabbi’uka bita’weeli ma lam tastati’ ‘alayhi sabra. English Translation: [Al-Khidhr] said, “This is parting between me and you. I will inform you of the interpretation of that about which you could not have patience.”

Ayah 79 Arabic: أَمَّا السَّفِينَةُ فَكَانَتْ لِمَسَاكِينَ يَعْمَلُونَ فِي الْبَحْرِ فَأَرَدتُّ أَنْ أَعِيبَهَا وَكَانَ وَرَاءَهُم مَّلِكٌ يَأْخُذُ كُلَّ سَفِينَةٍ غَصْبًا Transliteration: Ammas-safeenatu fakanat limasakeena ya’maloona fil-bahri fa aradtu an a’eebaha wa kana wara’ahum malikun ya’khudhu kulla safeenatin ghasba. English Translation: As for the ship, it belonged to poor people working at sea. So I intended to cause defect in it as there was after them a king who seized every [good] ship by force.

Ayah 80 Arabic: وَأَمَّا الْغُلَامُ فَكَانَ أَبَوَاهُ مُؤْمِنَيْنِ فَخَشِينَا أَن يُرْهِقَهُمَا طُغْيَانًا وَكُفْرًا Transliteration: Wa ammal-ghulamu fakana abawahu mu’minayni fakhaseena an yurhiqahuma tughyanan wa kufra. English Translation: And as for the boy, his parents were believers, and we feared that he would overburden them by transgression and disbelief.

Ayah 81 Arabic: فَأَرَدْنَا أَن يُبْدِلَهُمَا رَبُّهُمَا خَيْرًا مِّنْهُ زَكَاةً وَأَقْرَبَ رُحْمًا Transliteration: Fa aradna an yubdilahuma rabbuhuma khayran minhu zakatan wa aqraba ruhma. English Translation: So we intended that their Lord should substitute for them one better than him in purity and nearer to mercy.

Ayah 82 Arabic: وَأَمَّا الْجِدَارُ فَكَانَ لِغُلَامَيْنِ يَتِيمَيْنِ فِي الْمَدِينَةِ وَكَانَ تَحْتَهُ كَنزٌ لَّهُمَا وَكَانَ أَبُوهُمَا صَالِحًا فَأَرَادَ رَبُّكَ أَن يَبْلُغَا أَشُدَّهُمَا وَيَسْتَخْرِجَا كَنزَهُمَا رَحْمَةً مِّن رَّبِّكَ ۚ وَمَا فَعَلْتُهُ عَنْ أَمْرِي ۚ ذَٰلِكَ تَأْوِيلُ مَا لَمْ تَسْطِع عَّلَيْهِ صَبْرًا Transliteration: Wa ammal-jidaru fakana lighulamayni yateemayni fil-madinati wa kana tahtahu kanzun lahuma wa kana abuhuma salihan fa arada rabbuka an yablugha ashuddahuma wa yastakhrija kanzahuma rahmatan min rabbika. Wa ma fa’altuhu ‘an amri. Dhalika ta’weelu ma lam tastati’ ‘alayhi sabra. English Translation: And as for the wall, it belonged to two orphan boys in the city, and there was beneath it a treasure for them, and their father had been righteous. So your Lord intended that they reach maturity and extract their treasure, as a mercy from your Lord. And I did it not of my own accord. That is the interpretation of that about which you could not have patience.”

Ayah 83 Arabic: وَيَسْأَلُونَكَ عَن ذِي الْقَرْنَيْنِ ۖ قُلْ سَأَتْلُو عَلَيْكُم مِّنْهُ ذِكْرًا Transliteration: Wa yas’aloonaka ‘an dhil-qarnayni qul sa’atlu ‘alaykum minhu dhikra. English Translation: And they ask you, [O Muhammad], about Dhul-Qarnayn. Say, “I will recite to you about him a report.”

Ayah 84 Arabic: إِنَّا مَكَّنَّا لَهُ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَآتَيْنَاهُ مِن كُلِّ شَيْءٍ سَبَبًا Transliteration: Inna makkanna lahu fil-ardi wa ataynahu min kulli shay’in sababa. English Translation: Indeed We established him upon the earth, and We gave him to everything a way.

Ayah 85 Arabic: فَأَتْبَعَ سَبَبًا Transliteration: Fa atba’a sababa. English Translation: So he followed a way.

Ayah 86 Arabic: حَتَّىٰ إِذَا بَلَغَ مَغْرِبَ الشَّمْسِ وَجَدَهَا تَغْرُبُ فِي عَيْنٍ حَمِئَةٍ وَوَجَدَ عِندَهَا قَوْمًا ۗ قُلْنَا يَا ذَا الْقَرْنَيْنِ إِمَّا أَن تُعَذِّبَ وَإِمَّا أَن تَتَّخِذَ فِيهِمْ حُسْنًا Transliteration: Hatta idha balagha maghribash-shamsi wajadaha taghrubu fi ‘aynin hami’atin wa wajada ‘indaha qawman. Qulna ya dhal-qarnayni imma an tu’adhiba wa imma an tattakhidha feehim husna. English Translation: Until, when he reached the setting of the sun, he found it [as if] setting in a spring of dark mud, and he found near it a people. We said, “O Dhul-Qarnayn, either you punish [them] or else adopt among them [a way of] goodness.”

Ayah 87 Arabic: قَالَ أَمَّا مَن ظَلَمَ فَسَوْفَ نُعَذِّبُهُ ثُمَّ يُرَدُّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِ فَيُعَذِّبُهُ عَذَابًا نُّكْرًا Transliteration: Qala amma man dhalama fasawfa nu’adhibuhu thumma yuraddu ila rabbihi fayu’adhibuhu ‘adhaban nukra. English Translation: He said, “As for one who wrongs, we will punish him. Then he will be returned to his Lord, and He will punish him with a terrible punishment.”

Ayah 88 Arabic: وَأَمَّا مَنْ آمَنَ وَعَمِلَ صَالِحًا فَلَهُ جَزَاءً الْحُسْنَىٰ ۖ وَسَنَقُولُ لَهُ مِنْ أَمْرِنَا يُسْرًا Transliteration: Wa amma man amana wa ‘amila salihan falahu jaza’al-husna wa sanaqoolu lahu min amrina yusra. English Translation: But as for one who believes and does righteousness, he will have a reward of Paradise, and we [i.e., Dhul-Qarnayn] will speak to him from our command with ease.

Ayah 89 Arabic: ثُمَّ أَتْبَعَ سَبَبًا Transliteration: Thumma atba’a sababa. English Translation: Then he followed a way.

Ayah 90 Arabic: حَتَّىٰ إِذَا بَلَغَ مَطْلِعَ الشَّمْسِ وَجَدَهَا تَطْلُعُ عَلَىٰ قَوْمٍ لَّمْ نَجْعَل لَّهُم مِّن دُونِهَا سِتْرًا Transliteration: Hatta idha balagha matli’ash-shamsi wajadaha tatlu’u ‘ala qawmin lam naj’al lahum min dooniha sitra. English Translation: Until, when he came to the rising of the sun, he found it rising on a people for whom We had not made against it any shield.

Ayah 91 Arabic: كَذَٰلِكَ وَقَدْ أَحَطْنَا بِمَا لَدَيْهِ خُبْرًا Transliteration: Kadhalika wa qad ahatna bima ladayhi khubra. English Translation: Thus. And We had encompassed [all] that he had in knowledge.

Ayah 92 Arabic: ثُمَّ أَتْبَعَ سَبَبًا Transliteration: Thumma atba’a sababa. English Translation: Then he followed a way.

Ayah 93 Arabic: حَتَّىٰ إِذَا بَلَغَ بَيْنَ السَّدَّيْنِ وَجَدَ مِن دُونِهِمَا قَوْمًا لَّا يَكَادُونَ يَفْقَهُونَ قَوْلًا Transliteration: Hatta idha balagha baynas-saddayni wajada min doonihima qawman la yakadoona yafqahoona qawla. English Translation: Until, when he reached [a pass] between two mountains, he found beside them a people who could hardly understand [his] speech.

Ayah 94 Arabic: قَالُوا يَا ذَا الْقَرْنَيْنِ إِنَّ يَأْجُوجَ وَمَأْجُوجَ مُفْسِدُونَ فِي الْأَرْضِ فَهَلْ نَجْعَلُ لَكَ خَرْجًا عَلَىٰ أَن تَجْعَلَ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَهُمْ سَدًّا Transliteration: Qaloo ya dhal-qarnayni inna Ya’jooja wa Ma’jooja mufsiduna fil-ardi fahal naj’alu laka kharja ‘ala an taj’ala baynana wa baynahum sadda. English Translation: They said, “O Dhul-Qarnayn, indeed Gog and Magog are [great] corrupters in the land. So may we assign for you an expenditure that you might make between us and them a barrier?”

Ayah 95 Arabic: قَالَ مَا مَكَّنَّنِي فِيهِ رَبِّي خَيْرٌ فَأَعِينُونِي بِقُوَّةٍ أَجْعَلْ بَيْنَكُمْ وَبَيْنَهُمْ رَدْمًا Transliteration: Qala ma makkananee feehi rabbi khayrun fa a’eenoonee bi quwwatin aj’al baynakum wa baynahum radma. English Translation: He said, “That in which my Lord has established me is better [than what you offer], so help me with strength [of labor]; I will make between you and them a dam.”

Ayah 96 Arabic: آتُونِي زُبَرَ الْحَدِيدِ ۖ حَتَّىٰ إِذَا سَاوَىٰ بَيْنَ الصَّدَفَيْنِ قَالَ انفُخُوا ۖ حَتَّىٰ إِذَا جَعَلَهُ نَارًا قَالَ آتُونِي أُفْرِغْ عَلَيْهِ قِطْرًا Transliteration: Atoonee zubaral-hadeedi hatta idha sawa baynas-sadafayni qalanfukhu. Hatta idha ja’alahu naran qala atoonee ufrigh ‘alayhi qitra. English Translation: Bring me sheets of iron” until, when he had leveled [the gap] between the two cliffs, he said, “Blow [with bellows],” until when he had made it [like] a fire, he said, “Bring me, that I may pour over it molten copper.”

Ayah 97 Arabic: فَمَا اسْطَاعُوا أَن يَظْهَرُوهُ وَمَا اسْتَطَاعُوا لَهُ نَقْبًا Transliteration: Fama stata’u an yadhharoohu wa mastata’u lahu naqba. English Translation: So Gog and Magog were unable to pass over it, nor were they able [to effect] in it any penetration.

Ayah 98 Arabic: قَالَ هَٰذَا رَحْمَةٌ مِّن رَّبِّي ۖ فَإِذَا جَاءَ وَعْدُ رَبِّي جَعَلَهُ دَكَّاءَ ۖ وَكَانَ وَعْدُ رَبِّي حَقًّا Transliteration: Qala hadha rahmatun min rabbi. Fa idha ja’a wa’du rabbi ja’alahu dakka’a wa kana wa’du rabbi haqqa. English Translation: [Dhul-Qarnayn] said, “This is a mercy from my Lord; but when the promise of my Lord comes, He will make it level, and ever is the promise of my Lord true.”

Ayah 99 Arabic: وَتَرَكْنَا بَعْضَهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ يَمُوجُ فِي بَعْضٍ ۖ وَنُفِخَ فِي الصُّورِ فَجَمَعْنَاهُمْ جَمْعًا Transliteration: Wa tarakna ba’dahum yawma’idhin yamooju fee ba’din wa nufikha fis-soori fajama’nahum jam’a. English Translation: And We will leave them that Day surging over one another, and [then] the Horn will be blown and We will assemble them all.

Ayah 100 Arabic: وَعَرَضْنَا جَهَنَّمَ يَوْمَئِذٍ لِّلْكَافِرِينَ عَرْضًا Transliteration: Wa ‘aradna jahannama yawma’idhin lil-kafireena ‘arda. English Translation: And We will present Hell that Day to the disbelievers, on display.

Ayah 101 Arabic: الَّذِينَ كَانَتْ أَعْيُنُهُمْ فِي غِطَاءٍ عَن ذِكْرِي وَكَانُوا لَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ سَمْعًا Transliteration: Alladheena kanat a’yunuhum fi ghita’in ‘an dhikree wa kanu la yastatee’oona sam’a. English Translation: Those whose eyes had been within a cover from My remembrance, and they were not able to hear.

Ayah 102 Arabic: أَفَحَسِبَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا أَن يَتَّخِذُوا عِبَادِي مِن دُونِي أَوْلِيَاءَ ۚ إِنَّا أَعْتَدْنَا جَهَنَّمَ لِلْكَافِرِينَ نُزُلًا Transliteration: Afahasibal-ladheena kafaroo an yattakhidhu ‘ibadee min dooni awliyaa. Inna a’tadna jahannama lil-kafireena nuzula. English Translation: Then do those who disbelieve think that they can take My servants instead of Me as allies? Indeed, We have prepared Hell for the disbelievers as a lodging.

Ayah 103 Arabic: قُلْ هَلْ نُنَبِّئُكُم بِالْأَخْسَرِينَ أَعْمَالًا Transliteration: Qul hal nunabbi’ukum bil-akhsareena a’mala. English Translation: Say, “Shall we [believers] inform you of the greatest losers as to [their] deeds?”

Ayah 104 Arabic: الَّذِينَ ضَلَّ سَعْيُهُمْ فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا وَهُمْ يَحْسَبُونَ أَنَّهُمْ يُحْسِنُونَ صُنْعًا Transliteration: Alladheena dalla sa’yuhum fil-hayatid-dunya wa hum yahsaboona annahum yuhsinoona sun’a. English Translation: [They are] those whose effort is lost in worldly life, while they think that they are doing well in work.

Ayah 105 Arabic: أُولَٰئِكَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا بِآيَاتِ رَبِّهِمْ وَلِقَائِهِ فَحَبِطَتْ أَعْمَالُهُمْ فَلَا نُقِيمُ لَهُمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ وَزْنًا Transliteration: Ula’ikal-ladheena kafaroo bi ayati rabbihim wa liqa’ihi fahabitat a’maluhum fala nuqeemu lahum yawmal-qiyamati wazna. English Translation: Those are the ones who disbelieve in the verses of their Lord and in [their] meeting Him, so their deeds have become worthless; and We will not assign to them on the Day of Resurrection any weight.

Ayah 106 Arabic: ذَٰلِكَ جَزَاؤُهُمْ جَهَنَّمُ بِمَا كَفَرُوا وَاتَّخَذُوا آيَاتِي وَرُسُلِي هُزُوًا Transliteration: Dhalika jaza’uhum jahannamu bima kafaroo wattakhadhu ayati wa rusulee huzuwan. English Translation: That is their recompense – Hell – for what they disbelieved and took My verses and My messengers in ridicule.

Ayah 107 Arabic: إِنَّ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ كَانَتْ لَهُمْ جَنَّاتُ الْفِرْدَوْسِ نُزُلًا Transliteration: Innal-ladheena amanoo wa ‘amilus-salihati kanat lahum jannatul-firdawsi nuzula. English Translation: Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds will have the Gardens of Paradise as a lodging.

Ayah 108 Arabic: خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا لَا يَبْغُونَ عَنْهَا حَوْلًا Transliteration: Khalideena feeha la yabghoona ‘anha hawla. English Translation: Wherein they will abide eternally. They will not desire from it any transfer.

Ayah 109 Arabic: قُل لَّوْ كَانَ الْبَحْرُ مِدَادًا لِّكَلِمَاتِ رَبِّي لَنَفِدَ الْبَحْرُ قَبْلَ أَن تَنفَدَ كَلِمَاتُ رَبِّي وَلَوْ جِئْنَا بِمِثْلِهِ مَدَدًا Transliteration: Qul law kanal-bahru midadan li kalimati rabbi lanafidal-bahru qabla an tanfada kalimatu rabbi wa law ji’na bimithlihi madada. English Translation: Say, “If the sea were ink for [writing] the words of my Lord, the sea would be exhausted before the words of my Lord were exhausted, even if We brought the like of it as a supplement.”

Ayah 110 Arabic: قُلْ إِنَّمَا أَنَا بَشَرٌ مِّثْلُكُمْ يُوحَىٰ إِلَيَّ أَنَّمَا إِلَٰهُكُمْ إِلَٰهٌ وَاحِدٌ ۖ فَمَن كَانَ يَرْجُو لِقَاءَ رَبِّهِ فَلْيَعْمَلْ صَالِحًا وَلَا يُشْرِكْ بِعِبَادَةِ رَبِّهِ أَحَدًا Transliteration: Qul innama ana basharun mithlukum yooha ilayya annama ilahukum ilahun wahidun faman kana yarjoo liqa’a rabbihi falya’mal salihan wa la yushrik bi’ibadati rabbihi ahada. English Translation: Say, “I am only a man like you, to whom has been revealed that your god is one God. So whoever would hope for the meeting with his Lord – let him do righteous work and not associate anyone in the worship of his Lord.”

History and Background of Surah Al-Kahf

Surah Al-Kahf was revealed in Makkah during the middle Makkan period, approximately 4–5 years before the Hijrah. According to authentic narrations in Sahih Bukhari and Muslim, the Quraysh of Makkah sent two men to the Jewish scholars in Madinah to ask the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ three difficult questions to test whether he was a true prophet. The questions were about the story of the People of the Cave, the story of Dhul-Qarnayn, and the nature of the soul. Allah revealed Surah Al-Kahf (and parts of Surah Al-Isra) as a direct answer. The Surah not only answered the questions but also provided guidance for the believers facing persecution in Makkah, teaching them patience, trust in Allah, and the temporary nature of worldly power.

Tafseer of Surah Kahf

Surah Al-Kahf is one of the most beloved and spiritually powerful chapters of the Holy Quran. It beautifully combines stories of faith, trials, patience, and the reality of the Hereafter. The Surah begins by praising Allah for sending down the Quran as a straight book without any crookedness, serving as a warning and glad tidings for humanity. It then narrates the remarkable story of the People of the Cave (Ashab al-Kahf), young men who fled persecution for their faith and were put into a deep sleep by Allah for over 300 years as a sign of His power. Their story teaches the importance of trusting Allah during times of difficulty and shows that Allah protects His righteous servants in miraculous ways.

The Surah continues with the story of the man who was blessed with two beautiful gardens but became arrogant due to his wealth. His story serves as a warning against pride and over-attachment to worldly possessions. Next comes the profound encounter between Prophet Musa and Khidr (peace be upon them), which illustrates that Allah’s wisdom is infinite and that some things may appear harmful but are actually full of hidden blessings. Finally, the story of Dhul-Qarnayn demonstrates the ideal qualities of a just ruler — power, humility, and using resources for the benefit of people while building barriers against corruption.

Throughout the Surah, Allah emphasizes the temporary nature of this world, the certainty of the Day of Judgment, and the importance of good deeds, patience, and sincere faith. It reminds believers to seek protection from the greatest trial of the end times — Dajjal — by reciting this Surah regularly, especially on Fridays. Surah Al-Kahf ultimately calls upon every Muslim to prioritize faith over worldly attractions and to remain steadfast on the path of truth.

Importance of Surah Al-Kahf

Surah Al-Kahf is one of the most important Surahs in the Quran for daily life. It teaches believers how to face trials, maintain faith in difficult times, and protect themselves from the greatest trial of the end times — Dajjal. The Surah emphasizes that true success lies in faith and good deeds, not in worldly power or wealth. It is especially relevant today as it guides Muslims on how to live with patience, trust in Allah, and detachment from material things.

Virtues of Surah Al-Kahf

The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever recites Surah Al-Kahf on Friday will be protected from the trial of Dajjal until the next Friday. It is also said that reciting this Surah brings light (noor) on the Day of Judgment. Many scholars consider it one of the greatest protections in the Quran.
