Introduction to Surah Kahaf

Surah Kahaf / Surah Al Kahf (The Cave) is the 18th chapter of the Holy Quran, revealed in Mecca during a period of intense persecution of the early Muslims. Comprising 110 verses, it was revealed primarily to answer three challenges posed to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) by the polytheists of Mecca, upon the advice of the Jews, regarding the stories of the Companions of the Cave (Ashab Al-Kahf), the journey of Prophet Musa and Al-Khidr, and the great ruler Dhul-Qarnayn. The Surah’s central theme revolves around major trials that believers face—trials of faith (People of the Cave), wealth (The Two Garden Owners), knowledge (Musa and Al-Khidr), and power (Dhul-Qarnayn)—and offers guidance, patience, and divine assurance, protecting the reciter from the trial of the Dajjal.
