Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim
Ayah 1 Arabic: حم Transliteration: Ha-Meem English: Ha-Meem.
Ayah 2 Arabic: وَالْكِتَابِ الْمُبِينِ Transliteration: Wal-kitabi al-mubeen English: By the clear Book.
Ayah 3 Arabic: إِنَّا أَنزَلْنَاهُ فِي لَيْلَةٍ مُّبَارَكَةٍ ۚ إِنَّا كُنَّا مُنذِرِينَ Transliteration: Inna anzalnahu fee laylatin mubarakatin inna kunna munthireen English: Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn [mankind].
Ayah 4 Arabic: فِيهَا يُفْرَقُ كُلُّ أَمْرٍ حَكِيمٍ Transliteration: Feeha yufraqu kullu amrin hakeem English: On that night is made distinct every precise matter.
Ayah 5 Arabic: أَمْرًا مِّنْ عِندِنَا ۚ إِنَّا كُنَّا مُرْسِلِينَ Transliteration: Amran min ’indina inna kunna mursileen English: As a command from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger].
Ayah 6 Arabic: رَحْمَةً مِّن رَّبِّكَ ۚ إِنَّهُ هُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ Transliteration: Rahmatan min rabbika innahu huwa as-samee’u al-’aleem English: As mercy from your Lord. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing.
Ayah 7 Arabic: رَبِّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا ۖ إِن كُنتُم مُّوقِنِينَ Transliteration: Rabbi as-samawati wal-ardi wama baynahuma in kuntum moqineen English: Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them, if you should be certain.
Ayah 8 Arabic: لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ يُحْيِي وَيُمِيتُ ۖ رَبُّكُمْ وَرَبُّ آبَائِكُمُ الْأَوَّلِينَ Transliteration: La ilaha illa huwa yuhyee wa yumeetu rabbukum wa rabbu aba’ikumu al-awwaleen English: There is no deity except Him; He gives life and causes death. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers.
Ayah 9 Arabic: بَلْ هُمْ فِي شَكٍّ يَلْعَبُونَ Transliteration: Bal hum fee shakkin yal’aboon English: But they are in doubt, playing.
Ayah 10 Arabic: فَارْتَقِبْ يَوْمَ تَأْتِي السَّمَاءُ بِدُخَانٍ مُّبِينٍ Transliteration: Fartaqib yawma ta’tee as-sama’u bidukhanin mubeen English: Then watch for the Day when the sky will bring a visible smoke.
Ayah 11 Arabic: يَغْشَى النَّاسَ ۖ هَٰذَا عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ Transliteration: Yaghsha an-nasa hatha ’athabun aleem English: It will cover the people. This is a painful punishment.
Ayah 12 Arabic: رَبَّنَا اكْشِفْ عَنَّا الْعَذَابَ إِنَّا مُؤْمِنُونَ Transliteration: Rabbana ikshif ’anna al-’athaba inna mu’minoon English: [They will say], “Our Lord, remove from us the punishment; indeed, we are believers.”
Ayah 13 Arabic: أَنَّىٰ لَهُمُ الذِّكْرَىٰ وَقَدْ جَاءَهُمْ رَسُولٌ مُّبِينٌ Transliteration: Anna lahumu ath-thikra waqad ja’ahum rasoolun mubeen English: How can there be for them a reminder when a clear Messenger has already come to them?
Ayah 14 Arabic: ثُمَّ تَوَلَّوْا عَنْهُ وَقَالُوا مُعَلَّمٌ مَّجْنُونٌ Transliteration: Thumma tawallaw ’anhu waqaloo mu’allamun majnoon English: Then they turned away from him and said, “[He is] taught [by others]; he is a madman.”
Ayah 15 Arabic: إِنَّا كَاشِفُو الْعَذَابِ قَلِيلًا ۚ إِنَّكُمْ عَائِدُونَ Transliteration: Inna kashifoo al-’athabi qaleelan innakum ’a’idoon English: Indeed, We will remove the punishment for a little while. Indeed, you [disbelievers] will return [to disbelief].
Ayah 16 Arabic: يَوْمَ نَبْطِشُ الْبَطْشَةَ الْكُبْرَىٰ إِنَّا مُنتَقِمُونَ Transliteration: Yawma nabtishu al-batshata al-kubra inna muntaqimoon English: The Day We will strike with the greatest assault. Indeed, We will take retribution.
Ayah 17 Arabic: وَلَقَدْ فَتَنَّا قَبْلَهُمْ قَوْمَ فِرْعَوْنَ وَجَاءَهُمْ رَسُولٌ كَرِيمٌ Transliteration: Walaqad fatanna qablahum qawma fir’awna waja’ahum rasoolun kareem English: And We had already tried before them the people of Pharaoh, and a noble Messenger came to them.
Ayah 18 Arabic: أَنْ أَدُّوا إِلَيَّ عِبَادَ اللَّهِ ۖ إِنِّي لَكُمْ رَسُولٌ أَمِينٌ Transliteration: An addu ilayya ’ibada Allahi inni lakum rasoolun ameen English: [Saying], “Deliver to me the servants of Allah. Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger.”
Ayah 19 Arabic: وَأَن لَّا تَعْلُوا عَلَى اللَّهِ ۖ إِنِّي آتِيكُم بِسُلْطَانٍ مُّبِينٍ Transliteration: Wa an la ta’loo ’ala Allahi inni ateekum bisultanin mubeen English: And [saying], “Exalt not yourselves against Allah. Indeed, I have come to you with clear authority.”
Ayah 20 Arabic: وَإِنِّي عُذْتُ بِرَبِّي وَرَبِّكُمْ أَن تَرْجُمُونِ Transliteration: Wa inni ’udhtu birabbi warabbikum an tarjumoone English: And indeed, I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me.
Ayah 21 Arabic: وَإِن لَّمْ تُؤْمِنُوا لِي فَاعْتَزِلُونِ Transliteration: Wa in lam tu’minoo lee fa’taziloon English: But if you do not believe me, then leave me alone.”
Ayah 22 Arabic: فَدَعَا رَبَّهُ أَنَّ هَٰؤُلَاءِ قَوْمٌ مُّجْرِمُونَ Transliteration: Fad’a rabbahu anna ha’ula’i qawmun mujrimoon English: And [finally] he called to his Lord, “These are a criminal people.”
Ayah 23 Arabic: فَأَسْرِ بِعِبَادِي لَيْلًا إِنَّكُم مُّتَّبَعُونَ Transliteration: Fa’asri bi’ibadi laylan innakum muttaba’oon English: [Allah said], “Then set out with My servants by night. Indeed, you will be pursued.”
Ayah 24 Arabic: وَاتْرُكِ الْبَحْرَ رَهْوًا ۖ إِنَّهُمْ جُندٌ مُّغْرَقُونَ Transliteration: Watruki al-bahra rahwan innahum jundun mughraqoon English: And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned.”
Ayah 25 Arabic: كَمْ تَرَكُوا مِن جَنَّاتٍ وَعُيُونٍ Transliteration: Kam taraku min jannatin wa’uyoon English: How much they left behind of gardens and springs.
Ayah 26 Arabic: وَزُرُوعٍ وَمَقَامٍ كَرِيمٍ Transliteration: Wazuroo’in wa maqamin kareem English: And crops and noble stations.
Ayah 27 Arabic: وَنَعْمَةٍ كَانُوا فِيهَا فَاكِهِينَ Transliteration: Wa na’matin kanoo feeha fakiheen English: And comfort wherein they were amused.
Ayah 28 Arabic: كَذَٰلِكَ ۖ وَأَوْرَثْنَاهَا قَوْمًا آخَرِينَ Transliteration: Kathalika wa awrathnaha qawman akhareen English: Thus. And We caused to inherit it another people.
Ayah 29 Arabic: فَمَا بَكَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ السَّمَاءُ وَالْأَرْضُ وَمَا كَانُوا مُنظَرِينَ Transliteration: Fama bakat ’alayhimu as-sama’u wal-ardu wama kanoo munthareen English: And the heaven and earth did not weep for them, nor were they reprieved.
Ayah 30 Arabic: وَلَقَدْ نَجَّيْنَا بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ مِنَ الْعَذَابِ الْمُهِينِ Transliteration: Walaqad najjayna banee isra’eela mina al-’athabi al-muheen English: And We certainly saved the Children of Israel from the humiliating torment.
Ayah 31 Arabic: مِن فِرْعَوْنَ ۚ إِنَّهُ كَانَ عَالِيًا مِّنَ الْمُسْرِفِينَ Transliteration: Min fir’awna innahu kana ’aliyan mina al-musrifeen English: From Pharaoh. Indeed, he was a haughty one among the transgressors.
Ayah 32 Arabic: وَلَقَدِ اخْتَرْنَاهُمْ عَلَىٰ عِلْمٍ عَلَى الْعَالَمِينَ Transliteration: Walaqadi ikhtarnahum ’ala ’ilmin ’ala al-’alameen English: And We certainly chose them by knowledge over the worlds.
Ayah 33 Arabic: وَآتَيْنَاهُم مِّنَ الْآيَاتِ مَا فِيهِ بَلَاءٌ مُّبِينٌ Transliteration: Wa ataynahum mina al-ayati ma feehi bala’un mubeen English: And We gave them of signs that in which there was a clear trial.
Ayah 34 Arabic: إِنَّ هَٰؤُلَاءِ لَيَقُولُونَ Transliteration: Inna ha’ula’i layaqooloon English: Indeed, these [disbelievers] are saying.
Ayah 35 Arabic: إِنْ هِيَ إِلَّا مَوْتَتُنَا الْأُولَىٰ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمُنشَرِينَ Transliteration: In hiya illa mawtatuna al-oola wama nahnu bimunshareen English: “There is not but our first death, and we will not be resurrected.”
Ayah 36 Arabic: فَأْتُوا بِآبَائِنَا إِن كُنتُمْ صَادِقِينَ Transliteration: Fa’too bi-aba’ina in kuntum sadiqeen English: Then bring [back] our forefathers, if you should be truthful.
Ayah 37 Arabic: أَهُمْ خَيْرٌ أَمْ قَوْمُ تُبَّعٍ وَالَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ ۚ أَهْلَكْنَاهُمْ ۖ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا مُجْرِمِينَ Transliteration: Ahum khayrun am qawmu tubba’in wallatheena min qablihim ahlaknahum innahum kanoo mujrimeen English: Are they better or the people of Tubba’ and those before them? We destroyed them, [for] indeed, they were criminals.
Ayah 38 Arabic: وَمَا خَلَقْنَا السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا لَاعِبِينَ Transliteration: Wama khalaqna as-samawati wal-arda wama baynahuma la’ibeen English: And We did not create the heavens and earth and that between them in play.
Ayah 39 Arabic: مَا خَلَقْنَاهُمَا إِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ Transliteration: Ma khalaqnahuma illa bil-haqqi walakinna aktharahum la ya’lamoon English: We did not create them except in truth, but most of them do not know.
Ayah 40 Arabic: إِنَّ يَوْمَ الْفَصْلِ مِيقَاتُهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ Transliteration: Inna yawma al-fasli meeqatuhum ajma’een English: Indeed, the Day of Judgement is the appointed time for them all.
Ayah 41 Arabic: يَوْمَ لَا يُغْنِي مَوْلًى عَن مَّوْلًى شَيْئًا وَلَا هُمْ يُنصَرُونَ Transliteration: Yawma la yughnee mawlan ’an mawlan shay’an wala hum yunsaroon English: The Day when no relation will avail another, nor will they be helped.
Ayah 42 Arabic: إِلَّا مَن رَّحِمَ اللَّهُ ۚ إِنَّهُ هُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الرَّحِيمُ Transliteration: Illa man rahima Allahu innahu huwa al-’azeezu ar-raheem English: Except those on whom Allah has mercy. Indeed, He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.
Ayah 43 Arabic: إِنَّ شَجَرَتَ الزَّقُّومِ Transliteration: Inna shajarata az-zaqqoom English: Indeed, the tree of Zaqqum.
Ayah 44 Arabic: طَعَامُ الْأَثِيمِ Transliteration: Ta’amu al-atheem English: Is food for the sinful.
Ayah 45 Arabic: كَالْمُهْلِ يَغْلِي فِي الْبُطُونِ Transliteration: Kal-muhli yaghlee fee al-butoon English: Like murky oil, it will boil within bellies.
Ayah 46 Arabic: كَغَلْيِ الْحَمِيمِ Transliteration: Kaghali al-hameem English: Like the boiling of scalding water.
Ayah 47 Arabic: خُذُوهُ فَاعْتِلُوهُ إِلَىٰ سَوَاءِ الْجَحِيمِ Transliteration: Khuthoohu fa’tiloohu ila sawa’i al-jaheem English: [It will be commanded], “Seize him and drag him into the midst of the Hellfire.”
Ayah 48 Arabic: ثُمَّ صُبُّوا فَوْقَ رَأْسِهِ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْحَمِيمِ Transliteration: Thumma subboo fawqa ra’sihi min ’athabi al-hameem English: Then pour over his head from the torment of scalding water.
Ayah 49 Arabic: ذُقْ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ الْعَزِيزُ الْكَرِيمُ Transliteration: Thuq innaka anta al-’azeezu al-kareem English: [It will be said], “Taste! Indeed, you are the honored, the noble!”
Ayah 50 Arabic: إِنَّ هَٰذَا مَا كُنتُم بِهِ تَمْتَرُونَ Transliteration: Inna hatha ma kuntum bihi tamtaroon English: Indeed, this is what you used to doubt.”
Ayah 51 Arabic: إِنَّ الْمُتَّقِينَ فِي مَقَامٍ أَمِينٍ Transliteration: Inna al-muttaqeena fee maqamin ameen English: Indeed, the righteous will be in a secure place.
Ayah 52 Arabic: فِي جَنَّاتٍ وَعُيُونٍ Transliteration: Fee jannatin wa’uyoon English: Within gardens and springs.
Ayah 53 Arabic: يَلْبَسُونَ مِن سُندُسٍ وَإِسْتَبْرَقٍ مُّتَقَابِلِينَ Transliteration: Yalbasoona min sundusin wa-istabraqin mutaqabileen English: Wearing [garments of] fine silk and brocade, facing each other.
Ayah 54 Arabic: كَذَٰلِكَ وَزَوَّجْنَاهُم بِحُورٍ عِينٍ Transliteration: Kathalika wa zawwajnahum bihoorin ’een English: Thus. And We will marry them to fair women with large, [beautiful] eyes.
Ayah 55 Arabic: يَدْعُونَ فِيهَا بِكُلِّ فَاكِهَةٍ آمِنِينَ Transliteration: Yad’oona feeha bikulli fakihatin amineen English: They will call therein for every kind of fruit, safe and secure.
Ayah 56 Arabic: لَا يَذُوقُونَ فِيهَا الْمَوْتَ إِلَّا الْمَوْتَةَ الْأُولَىٰ ۖ وَوَقَاهُمْ عَذَابَ الْجَحِيمِ Transliteration: La yathooqoona feeha al-mawta illa al-mawtata al-oola wa waqahum ’athaba al-jaheem English: They will not taste death therein except the first death, and He will have protected them from the punishment of Hellfire.
Ayah 57 Arabic: فَضْلًا مِّن رَّبِّكَ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ هُوَ الْفَوْزُ الْعَظِيمُ Transliteration: Fadlan min rabbika thalika huwa al-fawzu al-’atheem English: As bounty from your Lord. That is what is the great attainment.
Ayah 58 Arabic: فَإِنَّمَا يَسَّرْنَاهُ بِلِسَانِكَ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَذَكَّرُونَ Transliteration: Fa-innama yassarnahu bilisanika la’allahum yatathakkaroon English: Indeed, We have made it easy in your tongue that they might be reminded.
Ayah 59 Arabic: فَارْتَقِبْ إِنَّهُم مُّرْتَقِبُونَ Transliteration: Fartaqib innahum murtaqiboon English: So watch, [O Muhammad]; indeed, they are watching [too]
History and Background of Surah Ad-Dukhan
Surah Ad-Dukhan is a Makki Surah revealed in Makkah during the period when the Quraysh were strongly opposing the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. It was revealed after Surah Al-Zukhruf. The Surah takes its name from the word “Dukhan” (Smoke) mentioned in verse 10, referring to a severe punishment in the form of smoke that would cover the sky — a warning to the disbelievers of Makkah. Some scholars also relate it to the smoke that appeared during the famine in Makkah as a sign.
