What is Istikhara?
Istikhara is a special prayer (Salat-ul-Istekhara) in which a Muslim performs two rak’ahs of nafl prayer and then recites a specific dua asking Allah to guide him or her toward the best choice.
It is not a way to know the future. Rather, it is a way to seek Allah’s help in making the right decision when your own mind is confused.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this beautiful prayer because he knew that human beings will always face moments of uncertainty.
Importance and Virtues of Istekhara
The Prophet ﷺ said:
«إِذَا هَمَّ أَحَدُكُمْ بِالْأَمْرِ فَلْيَرْكَعْ رَكْعَتَيْنِ مِنْ غَيْرِ الْفَرِيضَةِ، ثُمَّ لِيَقُلْ…»
Translation: “When one of you intends to do something important, let him pray two rak’ahs other than the obligatory prayer, then say [the Istikhara dua]…”
— Sahih Bukhari
This shows that Istekhara is a Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ and a highly recommended practice. It brings peace of mind, removes anxiety, and helps us rely completely on Allah instead of our limited understanding.
When Should You Perform Istikhara?
You can perform Istekhara whenever you feel uncertain about any permissible (halal) matter. Common situations include:
- Marriage proposals
- Choosing a job or career path
- Starting or investing in a business
- Moving to a new city or country
- Selecting a school or university
- Making major financial decisions
- Resolving family or personal matters
Important Note: Istekhara is only done for matters that are permissible in Islam. You should not perform Istikhara for something clearly haram.

English Translation: O Allah, I seek the best from You through Your knowledge, and I seek ability from You through Your power, and I ask You from Your great bounty. For You have power and I have none, You know and I do not know, and You are the Knower of the unseen. O Allah, if You know that this matter is good for me in my religion, my livelihood, and the consequences of my affairs, then decree it for me, make it easy for me, and bless me in it. And if You know that this matter is bad for me in my religion, my livelihood, and the consequences of my affairs, then turn it away from me and turn me away from it, and decree for me the good wherever it may be, and make me content with it.
Best Times to Perform Istikhara
While you can perform Istekhara at any time (except during disliked prayer times), some moments are considered more blessed:
- After any obligatory prayer (especially after Fajr or Isha)
- In the last third of the night (Tahajjud time) — this is the most recommended time
- Before going to sleep
- When you feel calm and focused
Note: It is better to perform Istekhara yourself rather than asking someone else to do it for you, because the feelings and signs come to the person who is directly involved in the decision.
What to Do After Performing Istikhara
Many people get confused about what happens after Istekhara. Here’s the clear guidance:
- Trust Allah’s Plan After performing Istekhara with sincerity, put your complete trust in Allah. Do not overthink or force a decision.
- Follow Your Heart (Inclination) The most common sign is that your heart becomes inclined toward one choice. If your heart feels peaceful and open toward a decision, that is usually a positive sign.
- Look for Ease If one path becomes easy and the other becomes difficult, it is often a sign from Allah.
- No Dream is Necessary Many people wait for a dream, but this is not required. The Prophet ﷺ never said that Istikhara depends on seeing a dream. Peace of heart is the main sign.
- Repeat if Needed If you are still confused, you can repeat Istikhara for up to 7 days.
Important Reminder: Istekhara does not show you the full future. It helps you choose what is best for your faith and akhirah.
Common Mistakes People Make in Istikhara
- Treating Istekhara like Fortune-Telling Expecting clear dreams or future predictions is incorrect.
- Performing Istikhara Without Sincerity Doing it just as a ritual without true reliance on Allah.
- Asking Someone Else to Perform Istikhara for You It is better to do it yourself because the feelings come to the person making the decision.
- Ignoring Clear Signs Sometimes people ignore their inner peace and force a decision anyway.
- Performing Istikhara for Haram Matters You cannot do Istikhara for something clearly forbidden in Islam.
- Being Impatient Expecting an immediate answer or sign.
