Surah An Najm

Revealed in Mecca, Surah An Najm (The Star) holds a profound place in the Quranic revelation as the first chapter in which the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) openly recited the verses of Allah in the Sacred Mosque, in the presence of a gathering of Quraysh leaders and other listeners. The Surah takes its name from the opening verse, which invokes the “star when it descends,” drawing attention to divine celestial signs as a testament to Allah’s supreme power. This chapter powerfully affirms the truth of the Prophet’s heavenly ascension (Mi’raj) and his direct witnessing of the greatest signs of his Lord. With a total of 62 verses, 5 Rukus, and 865 words, Surah An Najm addresses core themes of revelation, the error of false deities, and the absolute justice of Allah. It categorically rejects the claims that Al-Lat, Al-Uzza, and Manat—goddesses worshipped by the pagan Arabs—have any divine power, while also offering hope through Allah’s boundless mercy. The Surah concludes by warning of the approaching Hour of Judgment and reminding every soul that they will be recompensed only for their own deeds, making it a stirring call to reflection and sincere worship.
